The Cité des vins in Beaune

A key destination for discovering the climats and wines from across the entire bourgogne region

It is only natural that the main site for the Cité des vins et des Climats de Bourgogne should be in Beaune, the capital of Bourgogne wines. Beaune is a very important destination for tourism in the Bourgogne winegrowing region. With the emblematic Hôtel Dieu and its varnished tiles, home to the celebrated Hospices de Beaune; centuries-old cellars, starred restaurants, wine bars, tasting cellars, busy markets, shady terraces, festivals, and so on, Beaune welcomes almost two million visitors from around the world every year.

The municipality of Beaune is managing the project for the construction of the Cité, in close cooperation with the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB). Indeed, the Cité is part of a larger urban development project.
The BIVB is responsible for the content and messages inside the Cité, and for operating the site.

An educational and appealing offer

Covering almost 3,600m², the future Cité des vins et des Climats de Bourgogne will offer interactive and immersive experiences.

The visitor trail covers 1,100m², organized into sequences and areas for discovery involving the themes of the terroir, the wines, and the Climats of the Bourgogne winegrowing region. Visitors will be able to discover all the riches of a great winegrowing region shaped by human hand: The patchwork of landscape and terroirs, the Climats, work in the vines, the art of vinification, the subtlety and elegance of the wines, the conviviality, culture, and tradition.

The Climats as an emblem

The wines and the Climats of the Bourgogne winegrowing region are intimately linked. They share the same themes of history, culture, terroir, soil, appellations, toponomy, varietals, cuvées, and so on.

Through the visitor trail, a special area will be dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Climats of the Bourgogne winegrowing region.

A place bursting with life

Visitors can also enjoy a host of other services, such as:

  • Tasting workshops, multi-sensorial experiences, and training from the École des Vins de Bourgogne
  • A bar for discovering food and wine combinations
  • Temporary exhibitions and cultural events
  • A bookstore-boutique to help visitors better understand the world of wine, with articles, reference books, and educational wine selections.
  • A tourism information space providing a veritable connection with the vineyards of the Bourgogne region
  • A panoramic terrace

The École des Vins de Bourgogne is very involved with the project. At the heart of the Cité, it will be providing workshops and training for the general public (visitors, tourists, local residents), and also for professional market influencers.

There will also be a special welcome for businesses and schools. The Cité des vins will have areas and facilities dedicated to groups such as seminars, conferences, business meetings, visits from culinary schools, and so on.
